Takeshi HAMANAKA - Artist Statement

As the day fades into the night and light leaves the skies, observe the ending: Life, Death and Rebirth. Just like body, mind and soul, all living things approach this impermanence with an urgent sense to grasp, but also confusion, as it is not an end but a transformation into another dimension,
into a new reality.

My Work is a reflection of that impermanence. I search for its meaning. Perhaps one day I will find the answer and then be able to know who I am.

From painting to bronze and now in a spirit of invention and sustainability, disposable plastic bottles – all materials evolve into a new realm of possibilities.

This can be called Recycled Art.

Seeds 307    2007    Plaster, Plants, Wires

I wanted to express the dynamism of living things in this work. When seeds germinate,
they have freshness and transience. And growing human embryos have     vitality, free feelings, and rejoicing.
I think that they are very similar.

Survival    2004 Bronze_BlackGranite

This is my self-portrait.
When I made this sculpture I had been struggling
with my works among the tall buildings in Tokyo.
Joy    2002    Bronze_Black Granite

I was inspired by a small stone from Wreck Beach.
It seemed like it was dancing or flying with happiness.
Phoenix        2008    Plastic Bottles, Wires

The phoenix resurrects from among the ash, after burning its own body
when its time of death comes.
The Invasion     2009    Plastic Bottles, Wires

Some wasps attack other beehives to feed their children. The invasion is necessary for them. Humans make war to get wealth. We are not very different.
Queen      2008    Plastic Bottles, Wires

The spider survived fights, gave birth to children, and raised them.
She is a noble, brave queen. I want to live a life like her.
