Noah NJ Bowman  Artist Statement
My art is studied through my experiential knowledge of sports and the cultural languages we use through and of the body. As an athlete I am familiar with injury and the physical and psychological processes of healing. My work is an expression of these sensations of the human body.
The figure is a representation of a moment or movement situated in pictorial space. I am most intrigued when the body is at rest or in transition. One may be present in a physical sense but the mind is suspended in a subconscious regenerative state: the dream-scape. The series “Coma-Imbalance” reflects this natural ongoing dialogue between the body and mind and refers to the sense of falling/regression and the involuntary response to set ourselves right.
The physicality of the brushwork and the suggestion of contorted forms or limbs further emphasize the body in association with the disparate inner and outer plains of our existence, the conscious and subconscious mind.
